 History

The Achievement in Music program was originally influenced by the syllabus used by the Minnesota Music Teachers Association.  The ISMTA adopted the Minnesota Piano and Theory Syllabus in 1974.  In 1978 a new Illinois syllabus was written using that syllabus as a guide.  The piano repertoire was reorganized in 1982.

In 1996, work began to thoroughly revise the piano syllabus and the current program was completed in 2003.  Goals for the AIM program include the following:

--that the program be suitable for most students.

--that the program be designed in such a way that all students can feel successful.

--that students find the content relevant to their individual goals.

--that the material be presented in a clear, concise manner that is accessible to all teachers.

--that the material be presented in such a way as to allow for flexibility in teaching styles.

Over 2500 students across Illinois participate in these examinations each year!
